You’ve probably been told to ‘stand up straight’ many times, without giving any thought to consider why this is important. There are many reasons why it is important to maintain good posture, some of which may surprise you…
Headaches
It is well-known that headaches can be triggered by many different factors but being aware of poor posture as a potential trigger is a lesser-known fact. Cervicogenic headaches which originate in the neck are caused by posture where the head is too far in front of the shoulders. This leads to increased stress on muscles and joints in the upper neck, a stance which is typical of people who frequently work at their computers. This can be improved by ensuring that the monitor is at eye level and 18 inches in front of the user.
Stress
Poor posture can lead to a negative mindset. A study which observed the posture and associated thoughts of college students identified how they found it more challenging to think positively when sitting in a slouched position. When sitting up straight, the same students were able to access happy memories.
Sleep disturbance
Poor posture can also cause fatigue, as the body must work harder to keep itself upright. The change in the body’s alignment means that it becomes challenging to find a sleeping position to achieve undisturbed slumber. This pain will disturb individuals during their night’s sleep, causing them to experience even more exhaustion. Studies have also shown that individuals who adjust their bad posture experience less fatigue than those who fail to sit in an upright position.
Digestive problems
Stomach problems caused by bad posture often go unnoticed. Adopting a slumped stance after eating puts excessive pressure on the abdomen, which can cause acid reflux and heartburn. Poor posture can even impede digestion, which worsens constipation.
